Spain keeps flying while other countries shut for winter

Posted on 04 November 2016

The whole world loves Spain in summertime for its sunny weather, sandy beaches and lively nightlife. But you can get that in many Mediterranean countries. What makes Spain so special for British property buyers is that they can enjoy it in winter too, all within three hours of every UK airport.

Holiday home owners in Spain can jump on a flight in the afternoon and be relaxing by their Costa Blanca pool by dinner time. Even from the north of Scotland to southern Spain you will barely get through the in-flight movie.

The benefits of owning a property in Spain don’t end there. As the most popular destination for British holidaymakers – one in five of us went to Spain in 2015, that’s 13 million trips – every budget airline flies to Spain, many of them all year. It’s the most profitable route and competition keeps the price down. Easyjet’s Glasgow-Alicante return is £50 in mid-November; compare that with £80 return from Gatwick to Athens, despite the distances being similar.

Buy a property in Spain and you can get to your favourite Spanish golf course as easily in January as you can in June.

The biggest benefit of buying in Spain, however, is that those cheap, plentiful flights continue all year. If you buy a holiday home in some countries, getting there outside of the peak season can feel like an expensive odyssey. Buy in Spain and you can normally get to your favourite Spanish golf course from all over the UK, virtually as easily in January as you can in June. Whether you want Liverpool to Mallorca, Cardiff to Malaga, Southampton to Alicante, there’s no need to use up your precious holiday time or wait for half-term, just jet off after work or school on a Friday in February for some refreshing winter sunshine.

When you get to the warmth, Spain’s superb tourist infrastructure will whisk you from airport to resort much more quickly than the average British road – have you tried getting out of London or Birmingham on a Friday night? – especially in the off-season. It takes just 39 minutes to drive from Alicante Airport to Benidorm on the Costa Blanca, even less by train from Málaga Airport to Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol. Nowhere in Mallorca is much more than an hour from the airport and Palma de Mallorca is one of the most beautiful and stylish Spanish cities – even nicer in the winter sunshine and perfect for Christmas shopping.

So if you’re planning on joining the hundreds of thousands of British buyers who have already realised their dream and purchased a holiday home in the Spanish sun, you won’t be restricted to visiting your little piece of paradise in the summer months. The choice of off-season, low-cost flights to Spain, from a variety of locations around Britain, means you can take a much needed break whenever it suits you.
