You’ve budgeted for your new home in Spain, but have you budgeted for your new life there? It’s common knowledge that property prices are significantly cheaper in Spain compared to Britain, but what about the cost of living? You don’t want to run out of sangria money, or end up with a pool full of stagnant water because you can’t afford the maintenance costs. Let’s take a quick look at the price of some of life’s essentials in Spain. We think your bank balance will be happy with the figures.
The average price per litre of fuel is much cheaper in Spain (£1.03) than the UK (£1.14), where taxes on petrol are much higher. If you’re driving all the way by car, it’s worth noting that while fuel is also cheaper in France than the UK, it is even cheaper in Spain, so try get over the border into Spain before you fill up your tank again.
According to Numbeo – the world’s largest database of user contributed data about cities and countries worldwide – the average cost of basic utilities (electricity, heating water, rubbish collection) per month for an 85 square metre apartment in Spain (£99) is significantly cheaper than for the same size apartment in the UK (£141).

Not only is public transport more efficient in Spain, it’s also cheaper than the UK. For example, a monthly train pass will set you back around £60 in the UK, but costs something in the region of just £35 in Spain.
If you’re 60 or over and planning on retiring to the Spanish sun, you’ll be pleased to hear that you’re eligible for an annual tarjeta dorada (golden card) costing just €6. This card entitles you to a 40% discount on train tickets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and a 25% discount on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Food and drink
Now for the most important price comparisons of all: according to Numbeo, on average a pint of beer in Spain is almost 100% cheaper than the UK, a bottle of wine from the supermarket 77% cheaper and a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant 36% cheaper. Cheers!
