History of Villajoyosa
This picturesque town is rich in history and its cultural heritage dates back to the 6th century. Many foreigners have settled here over the years including the Greeks, Phoenicians, the Romans and the Moors. The Romans stayed the longest here and started a fish salting industry in the town. For many centuries the town has been an important trade point along this stretch of the coastline; trading in olive oil, cereals, fruit and wine was allowed by King Pedro IV. In the 16th century the town was very important for shipbuilding but it came under attack often from the Barbary Pirates who hailed from Algeria. However it is most famous for its delicious chocolate and it was during the 19th century the town started to dabble in the chocolate-making industry and due to its trade connections, it started importing cocoa from Ecuador and Venezuela and the industry took off. The well known chocolate brand called ‘Valor’, which can be found in most of the shops and supermarkets throughout Spain, comes from Villajoyosa. Today you can visit the chocolate factory (there is no charge for entry) and sample the mouth-watering free chocolate which you can then purchase if you wish. The 20th century brought tourism to the town and it now heavily depends on it.
